Ivy League Traditions

THROWING TOAST (LITERALLY) AT A FOOTBALL GAME.

Follow us for more dives into the traditions that defined our Ivy experience.

Remember those crisp autumn afternoons? The roar of the crowd, the anticipation building, and then… the rain of toasted bread. Yes, the infamous toast toss. It sounds utterly bizarre to anyone outside these hallowed gates, an inexplicable act of collective carbohydrate liberation. But for us, it was pure, unadulterated Ivy.

It’s one of those iconic moments that encapsulate the wonderfully eccentric spirit of our institutions. You’re surrounded by some of the brightest minds on the planet, people who will go on to shape industries and lead nations, yet here we all were, united in the ritualistic flinging of stale bread. Was it logical? Of course not. Was it messy? Absolutely. But it was ours. It was a moment of primal release, a shared, slightly absurd communion that defied the usual academic gravitas.

These traditions, whether the bewildering primal screams before exams or the whispered tales of secret societies, they weren't just quirky footnotes. They were the heartbeat of our student lives, shaping our memories and forging bonds that transcend time zones and career paths. The toast toss, in its delightful silliness, reminds us that even in places of profound intellectual pursuit, there was always room for irreverence, for collective joy, for a tradition that might seem outlandish to outsiders but meant everything to us. It’s a piece of that unique tapestry that makes us, us.
