Remember those first days on campus, a whirlwind of new faces and lofty expectations? You’d just arrived at one of the world’s most prestigious institutions, ready to conquer the universe, only to find yourself… standing in a circle, performing a ridiculously enthusiastic cheer with strangers. Or perhaps you were tasked with a scavenger hunt that felt more like a test of your willingness to embrace the absurd. We’ve all been there, whispering to a newfound friend, “This is so cringe,” while simultaneously, undeniably, smiling.
Orientation and first-year traditions at our hallowed halls are a peculiar beast. They’re designed to break the ice, forge bonds, and induct us into a community, often through methods that defy our carefully constructed intellectual facades. From awkward icebreakers to campus-wide singalongs or mandatory group activities that felt utterly out of place for future leaders, these moments tested our capacity for performative enthusiasm. Yet, beneath the veneer of eye-rolls and ironic commentary, something profound was happening.
These seemingly "cringe" experiences were the bedrock of our shared identity. They were the first threads of the tapestry that would become our college narrative. They made the intimidating transition less daunting, humanizing the grand institution and our equally brilliant, yet equally nervous, peers. Looking back now, whether you’re still navigating campus or years into your professional life, those moments aren't just funny anecdotes. They’re cherished memories, proof of shared vulnerability, and the very first taste of belonging to something truly special. We might have called them cringe, but deep down, we wouldn't trade them for anything.
