DORM-WIDE WATER BALLOON FIGHTS DURING READING WEEK. Follow us for more deep dives into the unique traditions that shaped our Ivy experience.
Remember those endless hours in the library, textbooks piled high, the air thick with caffeine and anxiety? Reading week was a crucible, a final gauntlet before exams decided our fate. But then, a subtle shift would occur. A ripple of whispered plans, a collective glint in tired eyes. Suddenly, without warning, the dorm hallways would erupt.
From every floor, doors would burst open, and a torrent of icy projectiles would fill the air. The shouts weren't of panic, but of pure, unadulterated joy. Water splashed off walls, soaked clothes, and extinguished, for a glorious hour, the relentless pressure of impending finals. Rivals became allies in a temporary truce, faculty advisors wisely disappeared, and the usual academic hierarchy dissolved in a cascade of laughter and friendly fire.
It wasn’t just a game; it was a primal scream disguised as childlike revelry. A necessary release valve for the intense intellectual demands we faced daily. These spontaneous, sometimes chaotic, dorm rituals were the unofficial curriculum, teaching us resilience, fostering community, and providing moments of genuine, unscripted connection amidst the structured pursuit of knowledge. They reminded us that even in the most rigorous environments, there was space for unbridled fun and human connection. What seemingly chaotic tradition do you remember most fondly?
