Building a snowman that represents finals week stress.
BUILDING A SNOWMAN THAT REPRESENTS FINALS WEEK STRESS.
Follow us for more deep dives into campus life, past and present.
You remember it, right? That crisp, cold air settling over campus as the semester wound down. Snowflakes starting to fall, pretty but ominous. Because with the snow came finals. And sometimes, amidst the late-night library sessions and endless coffee, a unique tradition emerged: the finals week snowman.
These weren't your cheerful, carrot-nosed, perfectly round figures. Oh no. These snowmen were manifestations of our collective dread and desperate hope. Lopsided, with stick arms maybe holding a tiny twig 'textbook' or a 'coffee cup' made of ice. Eyes glazed over with exhaustion, perhaps from actual pieces of charcoal. Each one a silent, frozen testament to the grind.
Was it a tradition we loved or hated? A bit of both, often. Loved for the momentary distraction, the shared absurdity of it all. Hated because it was a stark, cold reminder of the monumental academic hurdles ahead. Yet, there was a strange camaraderie in seeing them pop up across the quad, silent sentinels to our collective suffering. It was a bizarre, weather-based ritual that helped us blow off steam, even as it embodied the very pressure we were under. A unique part of our shared, intense experience. For alumni, these snow-sculpted symbols bring back a flood of memories – the challenges, the bonds, the sheer resilience. For current students, it’s a living, breathing (or freezing) part of your reality.
